December 2022, we experienced a severe storm which took out our docks. Your support and contributions will enable us to repair the docks and put them back in place for all to enjoy! We are a 501c3 since 2012.
If you're looking for a fun way to learn about sea lions, you've come to the right place!
The sea lions at the docks in Newport Oregon have been entertaining tourists for years. In this video, Jim Rice from Oregon State University answers the most common questions, including why are they all males, where do they sleep each night and when will they be back next time?
California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) love to lay on the rocks and the docs while they are visiting Yaquina Bay. Port Dock One is the main place to see them up-close. Voted best Free tourist attraction, Port Dock One is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There is no railing at the end of the doc, so please don't have children run down the dock!
Adult and sub-adult sea lion males can be found on the docs. They live here for 11 months out of the year. In July they migrate to the Channel Islands of southern California where the females stay year-round. (We locals call July, "quiet summer nights" because it is the only time of year you cannot hear them barking) After breading they return around the first week in August.
A live feed of the docs can be found at https://webcam.oregonstate.edu/sealionby. The feed is monitored by the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network to check for injuries due to entanglements in fishery gear and marine debris.
Newport Sea Lion Docks Foundation is a 501.C.3 charitable organization. We have worked hard to create the docks you now see. Our New docks were installed in April of 2022. Then in December a storm broke them all off and destroyed several of the docs. Please donate to help us repair them and get them back in the water for sea lions to enjoy.
No. It is illegal to feed them. Please do not. They get lots of food on their own. They love the local bounty!
Do not throw things at them, or scream at them. How would you like them doing that to you? They can be dangerous to humans so if you visit on a king tide and the docs are near the walk way, do not try to get close to them.
We are in front of Clearwater Restaurant, across from Ripley's Believe It or Not!
